Why Some Stories Stay

Some stories stay with us because they leave a door open. Not a cliffhanger, necessarily. Something quieter: a gesture we cannot interpret, a room we never enter, a sentence that changes its meaning days later.

In gothic fiction, the house is rarely just a house. A landscape may hold a memory that no character is ready to name. The most unsettling thing in a story is sometimes not what appears, but what someone has learned not to see.

That is part of the pleasure of reading slowly. We bring our own questions to the page. The book does not have to answer every one of them to feel complete.

Perhaps that is why a good ending can feel less like a door closing and more like a light left burning in another room.
